Guernsey occupation newspapers sold at auction

Guernsey newspaper from May 1945
A collection of 1,500 Guernsey newspapers published during the Nazi occupation of World War II were sold in our July 7th sale.

The extensive run started with the Evening Press dated Monday July 1st 1940 which details the Orders of Commandment of the German Forces during the occupation.  The 11 Orders included an amnesty on arms, a curfew and a ban on the sale of motor spirits. The run concluded with the Evening Press dated Thursday May 10th 1945 with the headline 'Island Day of Rejoicing' which celebrates the liberation of the islands and the arrival of the British. Many of the issues have been printed on just one sheet and the sizes and inks vary as the printers could only use what was available. Estimated at £200 - 300 the collection sold for £345 including premium to a private buyer as one lot.
